Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) is created by adding powdered limestone or calcium nitrate to ammonium nitrate.
Properties
- Sold as a granular or prilled product in various sizes (SGN)
- White to pale yellow in colour
- CAN is hygroscopic – avoid extended storage, particularly in humid environments
Advantages:
- The presence of calcium (roughly 8%) adds an agronomic advantage, but also stabilizes the product, making it a safer alternative to conventional ammonium nitrate
- The combination of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen is readily available for crop uptake
Drawbacks:
- Due to hygroscopic properties, the product will deteriorate over time, particularly in humid environments; avoid extended storage and damp conditions
Application methods:
- Used as stand-alone product or more commonly in blends with varying combinations of N, K and micronutrients, typically in specialty crops
- Broadcast (surface-applied)

Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN)
NON ADR Product
CAN is a valuable nitrogen-based fertilizer containing calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) from dolomite introduced in the manufacturing process.
- It is the nitrogen fertilizer with the most effective use on acidic or acidified soils;
- The presence of calcium and magnesium gives it a good ability to protect and maintain the pH of the soil;
- Due to the calcium in the composition it satisfies the need of crops which are large consumers of this element (sugar beet, rapeseed, sunflower, potato, etc.), it compensates for losses of calcium in the soil through production, it ensures quality of vegetable products (vegetables, fruits, etc.)
- The magnesium present supports photosynthesis, quality of production and ensures nitrogen efficiency;
- It is recommended for phase / additional application during the period of vegetation;
- Dosing is done according to needs imposed by pedo-climatic conditions and by expected production.
